I took this picture from my parents' backyard to remind me that even the harshest Québec winters can hold beauty.

The story behind it

During a moment of stress, I stepped outside and took some air, taking deep breaths. I looked up at the trees in the quiet winter air, seeing the beauty of the chilling ice on them. I thought it would make a nice picture, but also a reminder that there can be beauty in everything, even the harsh cold Québec winter.

History / context

The Great Ice Storm of 1998 The most famous historical event involving frozen rain in Quebec is the Ice Storm of 1998 (often called La Crise du Verglas). In January 1998, a series of three successive weather fronts stalled over North America, dropping massive amounts of freezing rain over five days. While a typical ice storm might see a few millimeters of buildup, some areas in Quebec received over 100 mm of ice. The Weight of the Ice: The ice coating on trees and power lines was so heavy that thousands of trees simply buckled or snapped. It was estimated that the weight of the ice on a mature tree was equivalent to the weight of several cars. The Power Grid: Over 1,000 massive steel transmission towers crumpled like tin foil. This left millions of Quebecers without power—some for more than a month—in the middle of a sub-zero winter. The "Black Triangle": The area south of Montreal was hit the hardest and became known as the "Black Triangle" because it was completely dark on satellite imagery for weeks. Quebec's Winter Climate: A Quick Breakdown Quebec is a massive province, so the climate varies, but generally, it is characterized by long, cold winters and heavy snowfall. 1. Temperature Extremes In cities like Montreal and Quebec City, temperatures regularly dip below -20°C, and with the wind chill, it can feel like -30°C or colder. Further north, in regions like Nunavik, it’s a true Arctic climate. 2. The "Snow Belt" Quebec receives a staggering amount of snow compared to many other northern regions. Montreal: Averages about 210 cm (approx. 7 feet) per year. Quebec City: Averages over 300 cm (approx. 10 feet) per year. 3. The "Continental" Influence Because Quebec is influenced by cold air masses from the Arctic and moist air from the Atlantic and the Great Lakes, the weather is highly volatile. This collision of air masses is exactly what creates the conditions for freezing rain: warm air stays high up while a thin layer of freezing air remains trapped at the surface, causing rain to freeze instantly upon contact with cold objects like branches or wires. Fun Fact: To deal with this climate, Montreal has one of the largest underground pedestrian networks in the world (RÉSO), spanning over 32 km, allowing locals to shop and commute without ever putting on a winter coat.
